I’On’s history

This neighborhood’s history dates back to the 17th century, although nomadic tribes temporarily called the area home before the 1600s. Settlers commissioned by King Charles II of Great Britain in 1663 explored the area that would become Charleston, although the neighborhood is named after Jacob Bond I’On, an influential plantation owner who lived in the area until his death in 1766.

I’On, as residents know it today, didn’t take shape until the 1990s, when Vince and Tom Graham visited the area. Its mix of rich history and natural beauty convinced the two to develop the 243 acres into a traditional neighborhood. The area faced many struggles when trying to get approved, as attitudes of the time were that New Urbanist Traditional Neighborhoods like I’On were impractical. It finally had its founding ceremony on April 30, 1995.
